Discover the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt, one of the top tourist attractions, historic Victoria. Located west from downtown Victoria, just over the blue bridge, the CFB was once a tactical naval port for the British Empire in the mid-nineteenth century. Today, is the Canada's west coast naval base, some of the Maritime Command (Navy) Component of the Canadian Forces and the house of the commander of Joint Task Force. The CFB Esquimalt spans 10,300 acres and contains 1,500 buildings and the base also employs about 4,200 military and civilian workers in 2000. History and heritage
In the mid-century nineteenth, the growing concern of the U.S. invasion, Russian and British Columbia led to an intensification of the British presence in western Canada. The depth of the narrow entrance Esquimalt provide the perfect place for the development of a naval port.
While the port has been created to respond to possible victims of the Crimean War, the base has proven to be a strategic location For many in the assemblies of the Pacific Marine. It soon became part of a global network of refueling stations in coal vital service in the Royal Navy defense of the British Empire around the world.
In the late nineteenth century, the British occupation in the Pacific was slightly reduced to little as the cost of defending a sky of the world fleet dramatically. Can not afford the cost base, Esquimalt was released and became Canada's official responsible for their own maritime defense. According to the Canadian naval base HMCS Naden was renamed after a schooner wood previously used in the base and Naden clan of Haida people of British Columbia. The advent of the Second World War made Naden training center for global Western Canada and developed rapidly as a function with the need for more personnel to the war effort.
On 1 April 1966, Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Esquimalt became part of organizational change that integrates the navy, army and air force.
Why is he here and what is happening today
The duty of CFB Esquimalt is assisting the Joint Task Force Pacific (FOIP) and Commander of Canadian Fleet Pacific. The task is to bring the fleet FOIP Canadian civil authorities, and the Allied and agencies in case of any defense, security or emergency need or area of BC The Pacific Ocean.
